Theses black and white pictures hang at the pub and were found in an old family photo album by the owner Doune Mackenzie-Francis, they feature highland life, from a bygone time as Doune hails from Inverness-shire. They are mainly of her Great Uncle Austin, who lived at Carradale on the West Coast. Austin also happened to own the portrait that hangs in the other room of the pub. We don't know who the portrait is of, we know the portrait is by Herman G Herkomer, painted in 1894 and might be of Marie Douglas or Mrs Arthus Stothert as there are portraits of women looking like this done by this artist. Herkomer was German and came over to UK to join his cousin of same name who was an established Royal Academy portrait painter in 1800s. You can see in one of the photos from Austin's album, Austin's wife (who was painted by Frank Dicksee and was called Mary Frances Linton so we know it's not her) is at the piano and the lady hangs behind her. He died childless (hence perhaps the proliferation of golden labradors in one of the photos!) and therefore his possessions we passed on to his brother William Dalziel Mackenzie. You can see William, Austin, William's Son Alec, and his son Colin (grandfather of Doune) in the photo Five Mackenzie's at Starthpeffer.
